SPC stands for Stone Polymer Composite — a rigid-core vinyl flooring built around a stone-plastic blend. It’s redefining what people expect from affordable, durable flooring.
The Core Construction
SPC has multiple layers: a wear layer on top, a printed decor film, the rigid SPC core, and often an attached IXPE or cork underlayment. The stone-plastic core is what makes SPC waterproof, stable, and incredibly tough.
Wear Layer Matters
Look for a wear layer of at least 20 mil for residential use. For high-traffic or light commercial, look for 22-32 mil. Thicker wear layers = longer life.
SPC vs. LVP vs. WPC
- SPC — rigid stone core, hardest, best for high traffic
- WPC — wood-plastic core, softer underfoot, slightly less dent resistant
- LVP — flexible vinyl, cheaper but less stable
