Click-lock SPC is designed for DIYers. With basic tools and a free weekend, most homeowners can install a room themselves. Here’s how.
Tools You’ll Need
- Utility knife and straight edge
- Tapping block and pull bar
- Rubber mallet
- Spacers (1/4″)
- Measuring tape and pencil
Step 1: Acclimate the Boxes
Let the boxes sit flat in the room for 48 hours before installing. SPC is more stable than laminate, but it still benefits from acclimation.
Step 2: Prep the Subfloor
The subfloor should be clean, dry, and flat to within 3/16″ over 10 feet. Fix any high or low spots before you start.
Step 3: Plan Your Layout
Run planks parallel to the longest wall or the strongest light source. Stagger seams by at least 8″ for a natural look.
Step 4: Install Row by Row
Start in a corner with the tongue side facing the wall. Use spacers to leave a 1/4″ expansion gap. Click each plank in at an angle, then press down. Tap snug with the tapping block.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Remove spacers. Install transition strips at doorways and baseboards or quarter round to cover the expansion gap.
